However, she later asked Brandy to audition for the role of Cinderella, saying "I'm already 33 years old, and I want you to play Cinderella". Brandy only agreed to do the part if Houston played her fairy godmother, because she was her "idol".[9] Changes to the Hammerstein plot in this version include the following: The Fairy Godmother begins the story, explaining that nothing is impossible. Disguised as a peasant, the Prince (feeling isolated in the castle) wanders in the marketplace (worrying his herald, Lionel), meets Cinderella, and they find each other charming. At the ball, embarrassed by questions about her family and background, Cinderella escapes to the garden in tears, where the Fairy Godmother appears for moral support. After her stepmother returns from the ball and is particularly cruel, Cinderella packs her belongings to run away from home. Her Fairy Godmother advises her to share her feelings with the Prince. After trying the slipper on all the other maidens, the Prince and Lionel overtake Cinderella on her journey to freedom. Meeting her gaze, the Prince recognizes her and places the slipper on her foot. At their wedding, the Fairy Godmother blesses the couple.

A 15 minute section of the Second Act was tailored to his presence, enabling him to hi-jack the show, breaking into his nutty-professor voice, tossing canes in the air and failing to catch them, telling joke after joke in his old vaudeville act, and then just as suddenly returning to the script and the plot. Jerry Lewis fans loved it. The show itself was much praised on its first return to London after some 40 years, but it ran for just over nine weeks.
An expected transfer to the Savoy Theatre from 16 October 1997 was cancelled.Presse : NICK CURTIS of the EVENING STANDARD describes the show as making “ a modest start to its London season “ and going on to describe Jerry Lewis’s performance as “ sometimes good, sometimes bad, and sometimes just plain ugly”
MICHAEL BILLINGTON of THE GUARDIAN says , “not wildly exciting but harmlessly pleasant.”.
MICHAEL COVENEY of the DAILY MAIL enjoyed the show and particularly liked the leading actors performances, saying, “Lewis is a treat, Miss Nixon a black bombshell in pink underwear”
CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says “Damn Yankees is the kind of musical they don't write any more. Emerging from the theatre with a fatuous smile on my face, I wished that they did.”

During Andrews' four-week vacation in early 1997, her much-hyped replacement, Liza Minnelli, allegedly stumbled over her dialogue and lyrics and missed nearly as many performances as she played, allegedly due to problems with her knees, although a few months later she checked herself into a rehab center to deal with her drug and alcohol addictions. A videotape of the show though, recorded on a cam from the audience during Minnelli's run, reveals Minnelli in fine form, displaying none of those problems.
Julie Andrews famously refused her Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, the show's only nomination. On 5/8/1998, she made a curtain speech from the stage of the Marquis Theatre saying "I have searched my conscience and my heart and find that I cannot accept this nomination, and prefer instead to stand with the egregiously overlooked."
